“I Wear It for You”
By: Lindsey Levine
Of all the memorable moments from this week, there is one I will never forget. In true Cora form (my youngest daughter), she pulled me into a dog store to get a toy for our Trixie. As we were paying, the woman behind the cash register noticed Cora’s Star of David and asked Cora if she was Jewish. I of course immediately spun around when I heard that! The woman (who I had noticed was wearing a cross) pulled out a Star of David which also hung around her neck. Showing it to Cora she said, “I wear a Star of David too. I wear it for all the Jews who cannot. And I wear it for you, and your mom.” I was speechless as I felt the tears well up. She went on to tell us that she started wearing it a few months ago after meeting a family from New York who no longer felt safe wearing theirs. So, she asked the owner of the jewelry store next door to get her one, and she did. She also told us her college roommate’s parents were Holocaust survivors. What a gift this woman gave Cora and me today.
